Dr. Bo Gu is an eminent figure in photonics industry. He founded his consulting firm Bos Photonics to develop the next generation of photonics technology with intelligent manufacturing after serving his last corporate executive position as the Managing Director of IPG Photonics Asia. He has developed 34 commercial photonics products, many in ultrafast laser applications in microelectronics. He has 102 patents and 170 publications and is the Photonics West LASE track chair and the founding chair of the Chinese Laser Market Summit. Dr. Gu is a Fellow of SPIE, OSA, LIA. Dr. Gu was elected to the very first group of International Fellows of the Chinese Optical Society in 2018.

Dr. Norman Hodgson is Vice President for Technology and Advanced Research at Coherent, Inc. in Santa Clara, CA. He has more than 30 years experience in solid state laser and fiber laser design, optimization and product development. Previously held positions include Vice President of Engineering at Coherent (2003-2009), Director of Engineering at Spectra-Physics (1998-2003), Inc., Senior Laser Engineer and Program Manager at Carl Zeiss, Inc. (1992-1996) and various university positions. He received his PhD in Physics from Technical University Berlin in 1990. He is co-author of the books “Optical Resonators “(Springer-Verlag 1996), and “Laser Resonators and Beam Propagation” (Springer-Verlag 2005), and recipinet of the German WLT award in 1994. Dr. Hodgson has authored over 90 publications and conference presentations and is co-inventor on more than 35 issued and pending patents.

Before his current appointment, Dirk Müller was Product Line Manager for picosecond lasers and prior to being PLM he was Director of Sales and Marketing at LUMERA LASER.

Dr. Holger Schlüter studied Physics at the RWTH Aachen and got his doctoral degree working at the Fraunhofer ILT, also in Aachen. He worked for 12 years at TRUMPF in various positions in Stuttgart, Connecticut and New Jersey.

Back in Germany he joined Technolas, a maker of laser eye surgery equipment as COO and CTO. He was the general manager of II-VI HIGHYAG and joined SCANLAB in 2015 as head of business development, where he works now.

Over the past years, Dr. Kwok is responsible for conducting feasibility study, process development and modelling of the laser processing equipment, and overseeing the overall system implementation to offer leading laser dicing solution to the market. This presentation will provide an overview of the interaction of ultrafast pulses with materials in the infrared, green and ultraviolet wavelength range as a function of the pulse fluence and the pulse duration, and present guidelines for the process optimization for 25 different materials commonly used in industrial manufacturing. These guidelines will include the optimum choice of pulse fluence, pulse duration, laser wavelength, and temporal pulse sequence (e.g. burst mode operation) to maximize process speeds and minimize the heat affected zone.

Modern ultra short pulse lasers reach power levels that challenge the speed of classical galvanometer scanners. The high deflection rate is necessary to separate the pulses and avoid heat accumulation. This requires high repetition rates from the ultra short pulse lasers. Alternatively parallelization by using multi-beam approaches is possible and requires high pulse energy from the lasers. We compare multiple beam deflection technologies for ultra short pulse laser manufacturing. This includes galvanometer scanners, polygon scanners, precision drill heads and multi beam optical engines. The individual advantages and challenges of these technologies will be presented.
